CHAPTER SIX
They walked through the formal gardens, and Rex enjoyed seeing the heirloom rose varieties. He took lots of pictures, sometimes holding himself in awkward positions to catch the right light. When they walked out of the lower end of the gardens to head toward the bass pond, he saw a beautiful tree shedding pink petals everywhere. It was positioned against a stone wall in the shade, and he knew he had to have a picture of J standing beside it.
J humored him and stepped into position, but when he looked through his lens, he saw a much better way to set the photo up. He wrapped his hands around J’s biceps to scoot him into position. The warmth of his skin and the zing of awareness that shot through Rex startled him. He looked into J’s eyes and froze.
J stared back. He’d felt it too. His tongue slid along his lower lip, and Rex wanted to follow it with his own. Not here. Not now. He let go of J and stepped back.
“Take a step or two to the side,” he said, his voice hoarse.
J nodded and did as he asked. He followed the rest of Rex’s directions, reaching up for one of the branches and looking at one of the large pink blossoms. The shot came out perfectly. Rex knew he was going to be staring at it a lot when he got back to Texas.
Rex wanted to reach for J’s hand as they crossed a small road and started into the azalea garden, but considering how close he’d come to kissing him after a simple touch, he thought better of it. The formal gardens were beautiful, but he enjoyed the more natural feel of the area they were exploring now. He wandered into several groves and shady spots off the main path to take more photos, some with J and some without.
When the path forked after they’d walked awhile, J grabbed his arm. “Let’s go this way. I want to show you something.”
Rex agreed happily, and J led him off the path and across a small stream. They came out in a little meadow full of overgrown wildflowers. They were surrounded by trees, and no one else was there. Unless he concentrated, Rex couldn’t even hear the chatter of the other guests using the main paths around them.
“I discovered this spot a few years ago when my mom gave me an annual pass to the estate. I used to come here a lot just to walk and think. This became a special spot for me, because it seemed like no one else knew about it and—” J stopped abruptly, looking embarrassed.
“I love it.” Rex took a step toward him. “Thank you for showing me.” Rex brushed his knuckles over J’s cheek. “I want to kiss you,” he said, echoing the words he’d used the night before.
J swallowed, then nodded. “I want to kiss you too.”
Rex pulled J into his arms, needing no further encouragement. He didn’t even check to see if anyone was watching.
